Depression, dementia and psychosis are just a few of the concerns of the elderly for their mental health. Typically these elderly people can experience more side effects when it comes to taking medication and women seem to be more sensitive than men are.
Alzheimer’s is one form of dementia and is actually the most common type. Lasting from five to twenty years, this degeneration due to Alzheimer’s can sometimes occur along with other symptoms. Delusions, behavioral disturbances and delirium are just to mention a few.
Early stages of dementia like memory loss, trouble in carrying out motor functions and also language difficulties are common and are sometimes confused with the normal aging process. Many times these symptoms are not noticed early because they can be masked by loved ones compensating for them.
There are secondary symptoms to dementia that can be treated with medication. Depression and aggressive behaviors are a few of these symptoms but medications just treat the symptoms and are not treating the dementia itself. Generally seen in women is the sensitivity to anesthesia, drug toxicity as well as urinary tract infections.
